Bible Reading<\/strong>:\u00a0 Psalm 34:11; Jonah 1:9-10.<\/li>
Introduction<\/strong>:
When God describes\nunbelievers in Romans chapter 3, one thing He says of their life of sin is that\n\u201cthere is no fear of God before their\neyes<\/strong>.\u201d Romans 3:18.
Unbelievers don\u2019t care about God or others, they mainly care about\nthemselves. <\/li><\/ul>
They have not yet discovered that God judges their sins in this\nlife and will judge their sins in the next life. <\/li><\/ul>
They don\u2019t think that they\u2019ll be cast into the lake of fire, nor\ndo they appreciate the horrors of hell, nor the statement, \u201cit is a fearful thing to fall into the\nhands of the living God<\/strong>.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
Some questions we need to ask during the course of this study \u2013
Question<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Do you truly fear God?<\/li><\/ul>
Question<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What does it mean to\nfear God?<\/li><\/ul>
Question<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What will we do if we\nfear God?<\/li><\/ul>
Question<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What benefits come to\nus by fearing God?<\/li><\/ul>
Question<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Who are some Bible\ncharacters that feared God?<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li>
I.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Kinds of Fear<\/strong><\/li>
Question<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What does it\nmean to fear God?
The Bible uses the word\n\u201cFear\u201d in 7 ways:<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
1.\u00a0\u00a0 Holy Fear<\/strong> = Love and respect for the\nmajesty and holiness of God.
In Genesis 20:11<\/strong>, Abraham said, \u201cbecause I thought, surely the fear of\nGod is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife\u2019s sake.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
Acts 9:31<\/strong>, \u201cThen had the churches rest throughout all Judea, Galilee and Samaria, and were edified and\nwalking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost were\nmultiplied.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
Psalm 34:11<\/strong>, \u201cCome ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach the fear of the\nLord.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
David speaks of this fear as\nclean and pure in Psalm 19:9<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>
Proverbs 1:7<\/strong> & Psalm 111:10<\/strong>, \u201cThe\nFear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
The Fear of the Lord enables man to<\/strong>:
a) respect God\u2019s authority (Revelation 14:9),<\/li><\/ul>
b) obey God\u2019s commandments,<\/li><\/ul>
c) turn from evil (Jonah 1:9), and<\/li><\/ul>
d) pursue true holiness (2 Corinthians 7:1; Philippians 2:12).<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>
The believer has this fear\nof God which is defined as \u2018the proper reverence of a child of God for his\nHeavenly Father (2 Corinthians 6:17 \u2013\n7:1<\/strong>)
so that we obey God because we:
\u2013 love Him for who He is,<\/li><\/ul>
\u2013 obey Him because He is\ngood and His plans are best for us, and<\/li><\/ul>
\u2013 respect Him because of His\npower to correct and discipline us.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\u00a02.\u00a0 Fear of Unforgiven Sin<\/strong>.
Caused by the work of the\nlaw written on unbelievers hearts.
This is fear of the guilt of sin.
\u201cwhich show the work of the law written on their hearts<\/strong>.\u201d (Romans\n2:15). <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>
Examples include<\/strong>:
a) Adam\u2019s fear of unforgiven sin when he sinned. (Genesis 3:10<\/strong>).<\/li><\/ul>
b) Felix\u2019s fear of unforgiven sin as he heard Paul preach. (Acts 24:25<\/strong>).<\/li><\/ul>
c) Men who reject the preaching of the Gospel: \u201cA certain fearful\nlooking for of judgment and fiery indignation which shall devour the\nadversaries.\u201d (Hebrews 10:27-31<\/strong>).<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li>
3.\u00a0\u00a0 Fear of Judgment at\nChrist\u2019s Second Coming<\/strong>.
The wicked will have a fear\nand terror of God\u2019s judgment at Christ\u2019s Second Coming.

See Isaiah 2<\/strong>:19<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>
God places a fear of His\npeople in their enemies to protect Israel:
a)\u00a0\u00a0 When God smote one\nmillion soldiers who attacked Israel\nduring King Asa\u2019s reign (951BC), the fear of God came upon them. II Chronicles 14:14<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>
b)\u00a0\u00a0 When a large army from\nAmmon, Moab and Mt Seir (Jordan) invaded Israel during King Jehoshaphat\u2019s reign\n(896BC), God smote the invaders, and \u201cThe fear of God wasin all the kingdoms of\nthose countries when they had heard that the Lord fought against the enemies of\nIsrael.\u201d(2 Chron 20:29<\/strong>)<\/li><\/ul>
c)\u00a0\u00a0 \u2018The land of Judah\nshall be a terror unto Egypt,\nevery one that maketh mention thereof shall be afraid in himself.\u2019 (Isaiah 9:17<\/strong>).<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li>
4.\u00a0\u00a0 Fear of Man. <\/strong>
Two kinds are:
a) Proper respect for those in authority.
i) Fear to whom fear is due.\n\u201cHe beareth not the sword in vain\u201d.\nRomans 13:4,7<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>
ii) Servants (employees) be\nsubject to your masters with all fear. 1\nPeter 2:18<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>
b) Senseless dread of man.
Israel was told not to fear the\nCanaanites, but to go and conquer the land. Numbers 14:9<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li>
5.\u00a0\u00a0 Cowardice and Timid ness<\/strong>.
\u201cGod has not given us a\nspirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.\u201d II Timothy 1:7<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>
\u201cLet not your heart be\ntroubled, neither let it be afraid.\u201d John\n14:27<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>
\u201cThe fearful, and\nunbelieving..\u201d Revelation 21:8<\/strong>.
This is people afraid of receiving Christ as Saviour.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>
Jesus said to the disciples\nin the storm on the Sea of Galilee: \u201cWhy are\nye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith?\u201d Mark 4:40<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
6.\u00a0\u00a0 Fear of the Unknown<\/strong>.
\u201cMen\u2019s hearts failing them\nfor fear, and for looking after those things that are coming on the earth.\u201d Luke 21:26<\/strong>. <\/li><\/ul>
Other examples are the fear\nof ghosts, or of scary things. (Job\n4:14-16<\/strong>).<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
7.\u00a0\u00a0 Fear for others and the danger in which they stand<\/strong>.
\u201cI was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.\u201d 1 Corinthians 2:3.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>
\u201cBut I fear lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.\u201d 2 Corinthians 11:3<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
II.\u00a0\u00a0 People Who Feared The Lord<\/strong>
1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Godly women fear the Lord. \u2013 Proverbs 31:30<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>
2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jonah said to the sailors, \u201dI fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea.\u201d \u2013 Jonah 1:9<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>
3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Joseph said to his brothers: \u201cI fear God\u201d. \u2013 Genesis 42:18<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>
4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Job was described by Satan to God as: \u201cDoth Job fear God for naught?\u201d \u2013 Job 1:9<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>
5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Repentant thief on the Cross said to the other thief, \u201cDost not thou fear God?\u201d \u2013 Luke 23:40<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>
6)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Obadiah said to Elijah: \u201cI thy servant fear the Lord from my youth.\u201d \u2013 I Kings 18:3,12<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>
7)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 One of the priests taught the people of Bethel how they should fear the Lord. 2 King 17:28,41<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>
8) Abraham was told by the angel at Moriah: \u201cNow I know that thou fearest God.\u201d \u2013 Genesis 22:12<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
III.\u00a0 What People Will Do Who Fear God<\/strong>
1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cServe the Lord with fear.\u201d Psalm 2:11<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>
2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cBlessed is everyone that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways.\u201d Psalm 128:1<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>
3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThey that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name.\u201d Malachi 3:16<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>
4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cYe that fear the Lord give audience.\u201d Acts 13:16<\/strong>.
\u00a0Fear of The Lord = listen to preaching of God\u2019s Word.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>
5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cPerfecting holiness in the fear of God.\u201d
Fear of The Lord = grow in holiness and love for God. 2 Cor.7:1<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>
6)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Husband and wife will submit themselves one to another in the fear of God. Ephesians 5:21<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>
7)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12<\/strong>), because you\u2019ll have to give account of your service to God.
This means to work out the details of how to live and serve God.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li>
IV. Benefits and Blessings of Fearing God<\/strong>
1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Psalm 15:4<\/strong> \u201cHe honours them that fear the Lord.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Psalm 25:12<\/strong> \u201cHim shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Psalm 25:14<\/strong> \u201cThe secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Psalm 31:19<\/strong> \u201cHow great is thy goodness laid up for them that fear thee.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Psalm 33:18<\/strong> \u201cThe eye of the Lord is on them that fear him.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
6)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Psalm 34:7<\/strong> \u201cThe angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear Him and delivereth them.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
7)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Psalm 34:9<\/strong> \u201cThere is no want to them that fear Him.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
8)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Psalm 34:11<\/strong> \u201cI will teach you the fear of the Lord.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
9)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Psalm 85:9<\/strong> \u201cHis salvation is near them that fear him.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
10)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Psalm 103:11<\/strong> \u201cSo great is His mercy toward them that fear Him.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
11)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Psalm 111:10<\/strong> \u201cThe fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
12)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Psalm 112:1-2<\/strong> \u201cHis seed shall be mighty upon earth.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
13)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Psalm 115:13<\/strong> \u201cHe will bless them that fear the Lord.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
14)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Psalm 119:63<\/strong> \u201cI am a companion of all them that fear thee.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
15)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Psalm 119:74<\/strong> \u201cThey that fear thee will be glad when they see me.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
16)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Psalm 147:11<\/strong> \u201cThe Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
17)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Proverbs 8:13<\/strong> \u201cThe fear of the Lord to hate evil.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
18)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Proverbs 10:27<\/strong> \u201cThe fear of the Lord prolongeth days.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
19)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Proverbs 14:2<\/strong> \u201cIn the fear of the Lord is strong confidence.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
20)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Proverbs14:27<\/strong> \u201cThe fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
21)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Proverbs 16:6<\/strong> \u201cBy the fear of the Lord men depart from evil.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
22)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Proverbs 19:23<\/strong> \u201cThe fear of the Lord tendeth to life.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>
23)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Proverbs 22:4<\/strong> \u201cBy humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, honour and life.\u201d<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
