{"id":3659,"date":"2024-03-26T21:40:35","date_gmt":"2024-03-26T21:40:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/allthecounselofgod.com\/?p=3659"},"modified":"2024-03-26T21:40:35","modified_gmt":"2024-03-26T21:40:35","slug":"names-of-christ-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/allthecounselofgod.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/26\/names-of-christ-2\/","title":{"rendered":"NAMES OF CHRIST"},"content":{"rendered":"<body>\n<p><strong>THE BREAD OF LIFE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>John 6<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><u>Introduction<\/u>:<\/strong><ul><li>In the East bread is primary, other articles of food merely accessory; while in the West meat is primary and bread is secondary.<ul><li>Accordingly \u201cbread\u201d in the Old Testament from (<strong>Gen. 3:19<\/strong>) onward stands for food in general.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>According to the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia , \u201cThe large pone or thick loaf of the West is unknown in the East.<ul><li>The common oriental cake or loaf is proverbially thin.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>The thin homemade bread is really named both in Hebrew and Arabic from its thinness as is reflected in the \u201cwafer\u201d in (<strong>Ex. 16:31; 29:23; Lev. 8:26; Num. 6:19<\/strong>).<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>\u201cIt is still significantly customary at a Syrian meal to take a piece of such bread and, with the ease and skill of long habit, to fold it over at the end held in the hand so as to make a sort of spoon of it, which then is eaten along with whatever is lifted by it out of the common dish (<strong>cf. Matt. 26:23<\/strong>).<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>But this \u201cdipping in the common dish\u201d is so accomplished as not to allow the contents of the dish to be touched by the fingers, or by anything that has been in contact with the lips of those who sit at meat.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>\u201cSuch \u201cloaves\u201d are generally today about 7 inches in diameter and from half an inch to an inch thick.<ul><li>Such, probably, were the lad\u2019s \u201cbarley loaves\u201d brought to Christ at the time of the feeding of the 5,000 (<strong>John. 6:9-13<\/strong>).<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Even thinner cakes, of both leavened and unleavened bread, are sometimes made now as of old, especially at times of religious festivals.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Often they are coated on the upper surface with olive oil and take on a glossy brown color in cooking; and sometimes they are sprinkled over with aromatic seeds, which adhere and impart a spicy flavor.\u201d<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The ancients were very much aware of the Divine processes that were necessary to bring about a grain harvest and consequently regard bread as peculiarly \u201ca gift of God.\u201d\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A day reminder of His continual and often undeserved care (<strong>Matt. 5:45<\/strong>) was reflected in Jesus\u2019 prayer instructions (<strong>Matt. 6:11<\/strong>).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201c<strong>Give us this day our daily bread<\/strong>.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>I.\u00a0\u00a0 <u>THE MIRACLE<\/u><\/strong><ul><li>The entire \u201cbread of life\u201d discussion is prefaced by the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000 (<strong>Matt. 6:1-14<\/strong>).<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>When Jesus compared Himself to bread, He must have had the entire bread making process in mind.<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before you can have bread there must be grain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A.\u00a0 The seed was planted. (<strong>Jn. 1:1,14; 1 Pet. 1:23; Lk. 1:35<\/strong>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>B. The seed sprouted. (<strong>Isa. 53:2; Lk. 2:40,52<\/strong>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>C. The seed bore fruit. (<strong>Lk. 24:19<\/strong>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>D. The fruit is cut down. (<strong>Isa. 53:8<\/strong>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>E.\u00a0 The grain is ground. (<strong>Isa. 52:14; 1 Pet. 2:21-24; Isa. 53:4-5<\/strong>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>F.\u00a0 The flour is baked. (<strong>Acts 2:27, 31<\/strong>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>G. Life giving substance is the result. (<strong>Heb. 2:10; 1 John. 5:11,12<\/strong>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>II. <u>THE MANNA<\/u><\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The listening audience of Jesus desired a perpetual miracle (<strong>Matt. 6:31<\/strong>).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They had failed to see the obvious comparisons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A.<\/strong><strong><u>The Type<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 It is interesting to study the Old Testament manna as a type or picture of Jesus Christ.<ul><li>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It came from heaven at night; Christ came, from heaven when men were in darkness.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It fell on the dew; Christ came, born of the Spirit of God.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It was not defiled by the earth; Christ was sinless, separate from sinners.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It was small, round, and white, speaking of Christ\u2019s humility, eternity, purity.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It was sweet to the taste; Christ is sweet to those who trust Him.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It had to be taken and eaten; Christ must be received and appropriated.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It came as a free gift; Christ is the free gift of God to the world.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>8.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There was sufficient for all; Christ is sufficient for all.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>9.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you did not pick it up, you walked on it; if you do not receive Christ, you reject Him and walk on Him (<strong>See Heb. 10:26-31<\/strong>).<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>10.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It was wilderness food; Christ is our food in this pilgrim journey to heaven.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>B. <u>The Materials<\/u><\/strong><ul><li>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Barley \u2013 Barley was in early times, as it is today. The main bread \u2013 stuff of the poor people. This is a picture of the availability of Christ to everyone.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wheat \u2013 Wheat was also widely used as a bread \u2013 stuff then, as it is now, the wheat of the Syrian plains and uplands being remarkable for its nutritious and keeping qualities.<ul><li>Three kinds, or qualities, of flour, are distinguished, according to the way of making:<ul><li>1). A coarser sort, rudely made by the use of pestle and mortar, the \u201cbeaten corn\u201d of (<strong>Lev. 2:14,16<\/strong>)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>2). The \u201cflour\u201d or \u201cmeal\u201d of ordinary use (<strong>Ex. 29:2; Lev. 2:2; 6:15<\/strong>)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>3). The \u201cfine meal\u201d for honored guests (<strong>see Gen. 18:6<\/strong>), where Abraham commands Sarah to \u201cMake ready\u2026 three measures of fine meal\u201d) with which we may compare the \u201cfind flour\u201d for the kings kitchen (<strong>I Kings 4:22<\/strong>) and the \u201cfine flour\u201d required for the ritual meal offering as in (<strong>Lev. 2:1; 5:11; 7:12; 14:10; 23:13; 24:5; etc.<\/strong>).<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The idea is that Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life, reaches into every sector of life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>III.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <u>THE MESSAGE<\/u><\/strong><ul><li>What does Jesus mean by \u201ceating\u201d His flesh and \u201cdrinking\u201d His blood?<ul><li>HE IS NOT SPEAKING LITERALLY!<ul><li>In (<strong>Jn. 6:63<\/strong>) He clearly says, \u201c<strong>The flesh profiteth nothing.<\/strong>\u201c<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>What gives life?<ul><li>\u201cIt is the SPIRIT THAT QUICKENETH\u201d (<strong>Jn. 6:63<\/strong>),<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>\u201cTHE WORDS that I speak unto you, THEY are Spirit and they are life.\u201d<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>In other words, a person eats Christ\u2019s flesh and drinks His blood \u2013 that is, partakes of Christ and receives Him \u2013 by receiving THE WORD as taught by THE SPIRIT.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Christ is not talking about the bread and cup of the Lord\u2019s Supper.<ul><li>The Lord\u2019s Supper had not even been instituted, and when it was, Jesus clearly stated that it was a MEMORIAL only.<ul><li>It did not impart fife.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>To say that a man receives eternal fife by eating bread and drinking wine is to deny the very Word of God: \u201c<strong>The flesh profited NOTHING.<\/strong> \u201c<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jesus is the Living Word (<strong>Jn. 1:14<\/strong>) and He was \u201cmade flesh\u201d for us (<strong>John 1:14<\/strong>).<ul><li>The Bible is the written Word.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Whatever the Bible says about Jesus, it also says about itself<ul><li>Both are holy (<strong>Lk. 1:35 and 2 Tim. 3:15<\/strong>);<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Both are Truth (<strong>Jn. 14:6; 17:17<\/strong>);<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Both are Light (<strong>Jn. 8:12; Ps. 119:105<\/strong>);<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Both give life (<strong>Jn. 5:21 \u2013 Ps. 119:93<\/strong>);<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Both produce the new birth (<strong>1 Jn. 5:18; 1 Pet. 1:23<\/strong>);<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Both are eternal (<strong>Rev. 4:10; 1 Pet. 1:23<\/strong>);<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Both are the power of God (<strong>1 Cor. 1:24<\/strong>; <strong>Rom. 1:16<\/strong>).<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>The conclusion is obvious: when I receive the Word into my heart, I receive Jesus Christ.<ul><li>We \u201ceat His flesh\u201d by partaking of the Word of God.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>\u201cI am the living Bread,\u201d said Jesus in (<strong>vs. 51<\/strong>); and in <strong>Lk. 4:4<\/strong> He said, \u201cMan shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word of God.\u201d<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Peter grasped the meaning of the sermon, for in (<strong>Jn. 6:68<\/strong>) he said, \u201cTo whom shall we go?
