Text: 1 Pet 2:11-17<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intro:
- In 1 Pet 2:11-17, Peter instructs us as Christians on how to conduct ourselves.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
  - Now that we are saved, we are \u201cstrangers and pilgrims,\u201d [1 Pet 2:11<\/a>] in the earth.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
    - We are \u201cthe people of God,\u201d [1 Pet 2:10<\/a>] citizens of \u201can holy nation,\u201d [1 Pet 2:9<\/a>].\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
      - Therefore, we are \u201cnot of the world,\u201d [Jn 17:16<\/a>].\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        Yet we still live in the world.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        So, we must know how God expects us to live among those who are not his people.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n
        \n
        As Christians, we are to<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        Abstain from fleshly lusts<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 1 Pet 2:11<\/a> \u2013
        In the world, we all have fleshly lusts [1 Jn 2:16<\/a>].\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        They \u201cwar against\u201d our soul.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        They lust against and are contrary to the Spirit [Gal 5:17<\/a>].\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        Therefore, we are to abstain from them.\u00a0 That is, we must choose not to do whatever the flesh wants.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n
        \n
        Don\u2019t make \u201cprovision for the flesh,\u201d [Rom 13:14<\/a>].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        Have our conversation honest<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 1 Pet 2:12<\/a> \u2013
        Our conversation is our conduct, our behavior.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        We are to \u201cwalk honestly,\u201d [Rom 13:13<\/a>].\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        That is, our conduct ought to be marked by integrity.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        We should adhere to a code of godly values.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        Of course, because the world is opposed to God, they don\u2019t adhere to our values, at all.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        To them, we are \u201cas evildoers,\u201d when we don\u2019t go along with their sin.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        Like Solomon said in Prov 29:27<\/a>, we are an abomination to them.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        The world hates Christians [Jn 15:19<\/a>].\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        Nevertheless, in the \u201cday of visitation,\u201d [Acts 15:14<\/a>], when some receive the gospel and believe, they will glorify God for the good works that they behold in us.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n
        \n
        Consider Paul\u2019s great change in attitude toward Christians after he got saved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        Submit to every ordinance of man<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 1 Pet 2:13-14 <\/a>\u2013
        Though we are saved, we are not above the laws of men.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        We are to be \u201csubject unto the higher powers,\u201d [Rom 13:1<\/a>], as Peter said, \u201cfor the Lord\u2019s sake.\u201d\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        In other words, when you obey the ordinances of man, you are obeying God. \u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        The only exception to this is when the law of man is directly opposed to the clear command of God, as in Acts 5:28-29<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>
        Concerning the ordinances of man, \u201cthe king (is) supreme.\u201d\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        He sends \u201cgovernors\u201d to punish \u201cthe evildoers,\u201d and to praise \u201cthem that do well.\u201d\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n
        \n
        See Rom 13:1-4<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        With well doing put to silence foolish men\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 1 Pet 2:15<\/a> \u2013
        \u201cwell doing\u201d is the will of God.\u00a0 It is not uncommon for men, who are ignorant of God, to bring accusations against Christians.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        Yet, when you do well, they have no legitimate accusation to bring against you [1 Pet 3:16-17<\/a>].\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        And, thus, they are silenced.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        They brought false accusations against Christ [Matt 26:60-62<\/a>].\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        They brought false witnesses against Stephen [Acts 6:10-15<\/a>].\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        They brought false accusations against Paul [Acts 24:10-13<\/a>].\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n
        \n
        The \u201cwell doing\u201d of Jesus, Stephen and Paul has testified to this day; their false accusers have been silenced for nearly 2,000 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        Not use our liberty for a cloke of maliciousness<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 1 Pet 2:16<\/a> \u2013
        As Christians we have liberty [Gal 5:1<\/a>].\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        Like Paul said, \u201call things are lawful for me\u2026\u201d [1 Cor 6:12<\/a>, 1 Cor. 10:23<\/a>].\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        Nevertheless, we are not to use our liberty as \u201ca cloke of maliciousness.\u201d\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        That is, we are not to use our liberty to justify doing something that is sinful or unlawful.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        We are \u201cthe servants of God.\u201d\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n
        \n
        Today, there are Christians who are mixed up in sin and justify themselves because of their liberty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        Honour all men<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 1 Pet 2:17<\/a> \u2013
        The trouble with people is that they want to \u201creceive honour one of another,\u201d [Jn 5:41-44<\/a>].\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        Peter\u2019s exhortation, Like Paul\u2019s in Rom 13:7<\/a>, is that we are to honour all men.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n
        \n
        Christians are to \u201ceach esteem other better than themselves,\u201d [Phil 2:3<\/a>].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        Love the brotherhood<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 1 Pet 2:17<\/a> \u2013
        This follows directly from the Lord\u2019s command to his disciples to \u201clove one another; as I have loved you,\u201d [Jn 13:34<\/a>].\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n
        \n
        It is important for us to remember what John said in 1 Jn 4:20<\/a>, \u201cIf a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        Fear God<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 1 Pet 2:17<\/a> \u2013
        This is perhaps the shortest sentence in the Bible.<\/li><\/ul>
        Yet it is undoubtedly the most profound.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        The fear of God is seriously lacking among professing Christians today.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        Paul and Peter definitely understood the duty to fear God [Ecc 12:13<\/a>].\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n
        \n
        Paul knew the terror of the Lord [2 Cor 5:11<\/a>] and admonished us to \u201cwork out (our) own salvation with fear and trembling,\u201d [Phil 2:12-13<\/a>].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        Honour the king<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 1 Pet 2:17<\/a> \u2013
        The king reigning at the time Peter wrote this was Nero.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        Nero was very ruthless and very immoral.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        And he was responsible for Peter\u2019s death.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        Nevertheless, Peter wrote, \u201cHonour the king.\u201d\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n
        \n
        The reason is that we are to honor the office, because of its authority, regardless of the occupant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        Conclusion<\/strong>:
        These are very clear instructions on our conduct.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>
        \u00a0Examine your own life to see whether you are living according to these demands.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n
        \n
        If not, make the corrections and get in line with God\u2019s word. \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
